So, if you haven't noticed, I have once again lost momentum with this 2.1 project - the problem isn't lack of time, it's motivation, I was on a fantastic roll until bang I hit plaxo. I really can't explain what it is, but I find it uninspiring at best. Seems like a lot of other sites with very similar functions. i did enjoy playing with icalshare.com - seems like fun if you're into it. Practical purposes in a library setting for plaxo I can't think of one. It's plausible that an online calendar could be feasible for team organisation like youth services programs or similar but I don't see it myself. For organisational tools i prefer tada lists still my prefered option!

Basically for me, plaxo made me hit a wall, hopefully from now though I'll be riding the downward train home - online art seems fun, a few posts to go and we'll be into it!

So I'm cruising all the LOLcats sites and trying to find some that are not only amusing, but informative and nerdy too. This is as good as it gets, seriously! Not only because flickr's search engine actually picks out images but just look at the expressions on their faces - plus the title.

As you may be able to see I'm having some issues with blogger not allowing me to embed an image and write a post all in one. Any fixes appreciated!

Regarding scrapblog though, this was a fun activity! I'm not sure what my "real world" use would be for this but still something nice and fun to use.

My only criticism would be that it took 30mins for it to publish - but once that was all done it worked fine.

One question though, with all these exercises we're doing and being given tasks such as this to use book covers - are we violating any copyright laws and if so.... eek!

I've been here, for over an hour (after playing last night too) with photobucket and after finally uploading photos - this step was easy and hassle free - I have created a lovely remix complete with my favourite author photos and some jazz music when, alas, every time I try to publish I get the "publish failed" message.

No reason why, No you've done this wrong, just thanks for playing goodbye.

So here, my dears, are some thoughts on www.photobucket.com

1. Uploading photos and labelling them is easy
2. Creating a remix can be quite time consuming however fun to see the finished results
2a. Hint #1 there is no delete button on the site so just press delete on your keyboard!
3. It would be great to upload snippets of your own sounds or music
4. I want to publish and show you all my glorious remix

So, any hints would be gratefully received - prizes involved to the one that actually works and, when it's done, prizes to the first person who works out who everyone is!

#26 Widget the world watcher

So here we are, back again.

Note the new template and lack of periodic table - it's time for a new vision for the blog! (nerdy still, but something else this way comes)

Yourminis is fun to play with, I am still however having problems with alignment, when I put things in the "sidebar" of my blog I always have to mess around with the sizing etc, what am I doing wrong please? I'd love to know - plus be able to have the text of my page expand all the way across the screen - help someone please.

But that's beside the point. I love widgets, think previously I mentioned that I have bloglines notifier downloaded on my PC, it's a great program and I'm sure in this journey there'll be many more to come. In the meantime, feel free to add to my "to do" list and please remember...

Well we had a look at Pop newsletters, but I don't really like it. It is a good format just drop and drag which is great, but I don't see a benefit for the libraries or for myself personally which has been the case for many of the other activities. I thought about trying to create a "I've moved" newsletter but found myself restricted by the templates - just not pretty enough for me.

#24 Zamzar (and beyond)

So here we are, a new year and the beginning of library 2.1 (well I'm beginning now anyways). Zamzar is a great tool, that I will definitely be reccomending to people. Very useful for people and I have used a similar tool to it pdfonline already in the library when students have those pesky publisher documents that we can't access. Problem with that site however is you can't access the document to edit it etc as it's all in pdf. I'll be intrigued to get to work and try to convert a publisher file to a .doc and see what becomes of it. This could save hours for whoever ends up converting all the publisher style flyers in youth services.

Zamzar is also useful for people who own video devices such as the new sony walkman that only accepts mp4 file formats - good to convert to, especially since it allows a 1GB maximum size.

#23 Conservation of Energy

The first law of Thermodynamics states : Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another.

So with this in mind, I must ask - where will all your energies go now? So much time we've put into this life long learning program, that after the "official" learning stages are done, we will have an extra share of energy to go around.

Yes, go outside and play, get some fresh air.

But then what?

Web 2.0 tools are created for us to play, learn, grow and adapt all sorts of information into relevant and practical forms that we can (and hopefully will) use daily, weekly, monthly for the rest of our lives. I know that certainly I will be using many of the programs and tools we've learnt about.

I've already downloaded the bloglines notifier, and am adding feeds daily!

Those of you who are regulars to this blog, will now see my grand finale project. The official Periodic table of books. It's finally complete! Click on an element and you'll be transported to one of the many books in my librarything catalogue. I used many of the tools we learned about in this for creating the html code. Zoho editor, image generators and librarything.

It's been a very fun exercise. I've enjoyed creating it - even if trying to find 118 different books was very brain tiring. Each exercise has taken a bit longer than first reported, that being said, for a brain to actually learn something it will use for a lifetime it is worthwhile putting the extra time and effort in, so that in ten years, twenty years, if not longer, the skills learnt in this module will still be a part of our daily lives. That is, after all the purpose of life long learning - is it not?

So thanks to everyone who's helped me, and the rest of the staff in this training. You're all stars!

As for the future of web2.0 in the library, I think it really is an exciting venture that we could all workshop. Maybe this could be the first task for LOGIC (Library Operations Group for Innovation & Creativity)

#22 Audiobooks

One thing about audio/ebooks is that you do lose the excitement seeing your favourite book, holding it in your hands and turning the page one by one, looking at the mastery of the woven language.

I say this, because I know how excited I was yesterday when at one of our branch libraries I saw in the lost property box a copy of my favourite book growing up "Two Bunnykins Out to Tea". The memories that just seeing the cover brought back are fond and not necessarily something you would get from an ebook on your computer or mp3 player. Although, there is something about the fond memories of your parents reading to you as a child too.

Ebooks do have their place in the world, and I definitely will listen and download them to listen to. However they never will supersede the original.

Downloading audiobooks with no overdue fees from libraries does sound like a great idea, it does pose some questions like, can the items have their "due dates" extended - in case the patrons can't finish listening in time, and how many clever people out there would be able to change the code and fix it so the book never gets deleted?

Well, I'm convinced, listening not reading is the wave of the future. For years I've always thought there was a technology barrier between the normal mp3 player and the pod casts. But it's great that I'm wrong, yes here I am in a blog saying I'm wrong.... quick someone find this on technorati!

So many patrons and co-workers have already jumped the podcasting bandwagon that I think I'll join in too - maybe sink the boat (or was that the mouse?)

I thought I'd found the perfect podcast to talk about when searching on PodcastAlley
I put in chemistry and library and found the secret library workers union. Sounds like fun yes? Well with only one podcast that I really can't get to work, I am disappointed.

The top two searches I keep getting are The Chemistry Podcast and, the Library Survival Guide.

The great thing I'm finding is that no matter what bizarre combination of words I enter, I always find something intriguing (and sometimes you really just want to cut your ears off.....) But that's life! I haven't yet found a "sorry there are no results matching your search" page for podcasts, so maybe the world is expanding it's repertoire to my likings?

I tried to subscribe through the xml script from podcast alley but once i got it into bloglines things went crazy. Not sure what I'm doing wrong tonight (is it the evils of Friday night?? no I'm not that tragic, I'm working tomorrow ok!) so I moved to podcast.net and it worked a treat. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but with Web 2.0 if one program doesn't work, there's always something else that will do the same job.

As for relevance in a library setting, the most frustrating part with podcasts and search engines in them you get so many results, that if you're just browsing you would spend hours listening to a feed to find out if you wanted to subscribe or not, is it worth it, yes of course. We all multitask and in a frantic world where sitting down to read a book seems like a somewhat arduous task at times, listening to something of note in a car/tram/library would make learning a lot more fun! I know from this discovery exercise, the podcasts I've listened to have been more informative than the text.

#20 You Tube, I Tube, We ALL Tube

Believe it or not, this is my first experience with You-Tube. Very exciting I have to say, I might have to have a quick lobotomy before I get too addicted......

I've found some amazing chemistry and science sites too. Library dominoes looks like so much fun, maybe that's a new way to deal with all those deletions we have....?

You tube, for a beginner is an interesting experience. It's hard to think to start with, and work out what you will search for, but after a few basic searches with familiar keywords you find out that it's not that scary either (common theme with web 2.0). The video concept is great and has captured the world by storm, however, can it be applied in libraries? I say YES. We have so many programs we offer for people who can come to the library, but what about large groups (schools) or housebound people? We also go through phases of our adult book talk events being booked out, so wouldn't it be great for people to be able to see these too. Obviously there are the complications with copywrite laws, but with some well grounded research we'd be able to get the right forms for authors and speakers to fill out so we can broadcast and advertise our events not only in the local area but... all over the world!

#19 Discovering the Web 2.0 Winners

What outstanding entrants and winners in the Web 2.0 awards. Just scrolling down the page is exhausting yet exhilarating at the same time.

My first choice for a page to explore, not surprisingly, has restricted content... something about alcohol and tobacco - which really, from a site called cocktail builder, you'd be annoyed if there wasn't any of that in it!

So I thought I'd keep scrolling and I found the amazing green site be green now. You can learn, share and play with carbon offsets and even find green gifts to buy!

Another site, of worthy note - if not for it's sheer novelty of it all, is Grant Robinson's Guess the google game. From a montage of images you get to play a little game and guess what the key word/words were that generated these images. Of course, lots of fun for the whole family.

With so many sites winning awards, and so much to see and share, you really can't not be ready for the challenge of this life long learning exercise - Web 2.0. It really is here to stay!

PS I did initially think this would be an exercise to discover our own Victorian Web 2.0 Winners and notable blogs, so since it's not, I'm going to tell you all, you should go to Diggly's blog and See the gorgeous Rodney!

#18 Online Productivity Sites

Looking now at online productivity sites like zoho and google docs I can see both a good and bad side to them. Probably the best is that you can edit documents offline and then upload/synchronise them once you go online, so if you are on an internet plan that can throttle you for having too much fun on the web then you can still edit and create offline. Excellent feature. One thing I am having trouble with is navigating around zoho, it's quite different, obviously, to the office applications we're so well versed in using every day. With some time and loving attention I'm sure they will become my best friend.

That being said however, what IS my new best friend is abracadabra..... TA DA......

Ta da lists are my new best friend, no longer in the middle of the night when I'm worrying about all of the things I've forgotten to do at work do I frantically have to find a piece of paper and write all of my tasks down, tadalists can do it for me, and once I've completed a job a simple tick in the box waves a magic wand and the job is done. For people in job share roles and teams you can also share lists with friends so you can all add and mark things off when they're done.

Ta da! Web 2.0 is done!

For those of you who know me, you may know that to me, wiki's have been scary. Whenever I've done the further internet demo - that's the question I fear the most, "what is wikipedia". Well, now I know. I mean yes, I sort of knew and understood, but now it does make more sense.

Wikis in the library would be great, maybe like the online databases group gulliver (I think it is) we could join together with a group of libraries and create wikis, one for homework help type programs, one for online book groups, one for reviews, youth events, childrens books, the possibilities are endless, and if I'm thinking of these ideas at 8:30 at night, what other great ideas are out there that with a cumulative effort after this program we can all join together and take over the internet with...

The world of wikis really is an exciting thing!

#15 The Way forward for 2.0

Trying to "recruit" people into this learning program was a difficult job, everyone had too much work to do and no one really thought learning about blogs was going to be useful.

Well, weren't we all wrong? So many work colleagues are now saying how much fun they're having learning all the new tools. 15mins a day however just isn't long enough to get the whole idea of a new concept and so many of us are taking time out at home to enjoy this tool.

That's all beside the point however, the point is, where to for libraries and web 2.0?

At a recent business planning meeting so many ideas were explored for the future of youth services and the way programs and special events can be delivered. Web 2.0 tools like youtube and podcasting will surely revolutionise the way we deliver storytimes and school age programs.

Wouldn't it be great to have an online instant librarian who can answer your questions any time of the day. Or what about if you were in google searching for titles, and up comes an alert that says what books your local library has on that topic - could be spooky - but it could be the way forward too. It would be awesome to be in amazon searching for a book only to be told you don't have to buy it because there's a copy available at Balwyn (for example).

I think libraries 2.0 is the way forward for libraries, library thing is showing us how to do things easier, web 2.0 skills we learn now, will not only be life long learning skills, but job long skills too!

With the help of our delightful muse tapsister I've finally got my technorati party under way. It's amusing to note that my post already has an authority of 2 (thanks to the librarianidol).

I did need some explanation for this blog, ie why do you have to claim your blog etc. Now I understand that the purpose of claiming your blog is so that it will appear in searches and other like-minded activities, somewhat like making sure your website shows up in google.

Well yes, this is probably the most taxing exercise I've had yet.

I get it,
I can do it,
but there's part of me that just doesn't see the logic or sense to it.

While the practicalities are numerous - given that I don't have my "own" computer at work - and have to constantly log in to which ever PC isn't being used, having a site where all my bookmarks are tagged online makes sense, rather the frustration of finding out that I'm on the "wrong" computer is evident. I get that. That's fine. Whether or not I can get into this is a different story.

Well, I'm really getting through these exercises now... it's quite addictive!

I was hesitant I must say to do this section, speaking to colleagues who had done this already I was skeptical that it would be worthwhile. I have however found a use for it, a love for it, it's great (if not just for the novelty of it all)

One thing that I have always disliked about google is when I search for scientific information there's too much general info or even with a myriad of keywords still a certain level of sifting through until you find what you want. Then when you've found the site you want, more often than not you then have to use the search function on that site. Time consuming munch munch munch! Well I've gained so much time now, rolling together all my favourite chemistry, forensics and science sites.

Have a play and learn something new, go on try it (select Nerdistry from the drop down menu)....

Many of you may know, regulars of my blog, that I discovered Library thing quite a while ago. It's been a part of my blog since day one (well almost!). I love it, what better way to quickly connect to other people who love the same books as you and be able to see what others are reading? Those people out there, the ones with all the brains who come up with these ideas, well done, congratulations, give yourselves a big pat on the back. You're amazing!

We did, I will admit, have fun playing with these right at the start and the beginning of flickr but cooooool stuff here. #9 Finding Feeds

So, now I know what RSS is, how do I use it, how do I find information that can actually help me other than accidentally stumbling upon it in my day-to-day searching? Well of course, there is an answer... Technorati! Surely I shouldn't be surprised, the internet (and wait this is going to be groundbreakingly shocking) the internet is logical!

Logical you say, seriously? Yes, seriously. It's not rocket scienctry........

You just need to know where and how to look. Sites like technorati and others I'm sure, are amazing tools to cut down your frustration finding information online and also the frustration caused by checking the same sites frequently only to find out that nothing has been updated. Logical, I say, because there is technology around, like RSS and now there are sites that allow you to easily search and refine all your RSS feeds. YAY!

Probably the most frustrating part of this whole exercise is that by the time I got to it sites like feedster and topix are under construction and I'm unable to look at them...

We pay a price for procrastination right?

RSS, would it by any other name be as sweet? Finally here's an instance where an acronym actually is right. Really Simple Syndication. Oh My Goodness, it is so simple, it's amazing that for years I've been blindly ignoring the orange square unaware how powerful it actually is. There are so many functions and so much you can do with it I thnk I'm slowly going insane with addiction to feeds.

So many companies and sites are grabbing onto the RSS craze and you can use it anywhere, everywhere - even my mobile has an RSS news reader - which by the way, I'd always ignored because I had no idea what it was!

Don't spend hours looking at news sites, job sites, announcements, bloglines the feeds and save your fingers from walking!!!

I'm in love... what an amazing invention...... what's next!

PS You really don't want to see my bloglines account, it's seriously geeky full of chemistry sites

Technology, as I have eluded to in previous posts is a wonderful thing that keeps continually evolving every second of everyday. Even if it's just when you go to your Gmail account, every second you get 0.001MB extra of storage space, or is that GB extra... I should check it to see!

My favourite piece of technology at the moment, is, surprisingly, not my new laptop, but my Sony digital Walkman. Not quite an i-Pod but with as much fun as I can handle in an afternoon (especially at the gym), if I did have an i-Pod, I can only imagine that I'd fall off the treadmill trying too hard to watch the video.

We all love technology and we all have our own piece that we love most, perhaps you can share what yours is!

I'm really enjoying playing around with text in pictures, I had a variety of choices today, from geeky scientist cartoons to this wonderful crime scene placard. Of course I went with the forensics angle.

So much new terminology for my tired brain to handle.... Blog, Flickr, wiki the list goes on! Isn't it a wonderful world where words keep emerging, technology keeps evolving and despite the impression that there is no more room for new inventions, thinks keep appearing as if from no where!

Exploring Flickr this week has been a fun exercise. Looking at the goofy pictures of crazy adventures, geeky exploits and what else have you!

Thank you to everyone who voted in my first week's poll.

The overwhelming majority of you are having a great time here at Web 2.0 training which is great to see. 75% of respondees voted "yes enjoying very much" while only 25% of you who were able to find my blog hadn't really started yet.

Great to see so many people enjoying the learning curve along with the rest of the team. It's good to not only make your own blog but spend a couple of minutes commenting or participating on another blog so that everyone feels "loved".

We're all learning here and learning by play and learning by participation is one of the best things we can do!

Blogging, who would have thought I'd be here......

It's amazing with a few key strokes and clicks of the mouse that here I have my own web page that I can write and play with all day long. Can't wait to finally use all that html coding I learnt back at Uni - finally a use for it

Template choice would have to be one of the most difficult things right now (not to mention the fact I'm going to have to watch my fingers don't misspell words!)

Name your blog hey - well why you might wonder would i use table of books well I'm a chemist and as such rather than loving the order of Dewey decimal (which i do enjoy too) I love the order of the periodic table! It's so simple in its explanation and lovingly thought through so much that you can predict the atomic structure of the next element. Ahhh chemistry, my first true great love. Who knows, maybe web 2.0 will be my second........

I used to think "life long learning" was just a stupid catch phrase word of the week that my previous employer had discovered on one of his many overseas study tours. That being said, I've learnt a lot more about this process and phrase from these podcasts than I did from him. Sorry Mike!

Life long learning is a practical venture that really will stand you on good ground for your entire life! (hence life long.....)

A very pregnant mother came into the library yesterday to get some books on potty training for her other child who was very keen to learn something new. Isn't funny how something that easy to us now, seems like such a chore that this lady needs to read books about how to convey to a child a life long learnt skill.

This class is going to be great! Learning about blogging and all new things net related will definitely catch me up on some technology that I've been out of touch with (I really should get the internet at home!)

#1 Discovery is Fun!

While I may be behind on posting articles to my blog, I must admit so far this has been a wonderful adventure. I'm currently creating a treasure map for a school holiday activity and ironically what I really want to do is put a big x marks the spot over anything to do with this program.

Web 2.0 is a great adventure, even for those who just dig at the surface you can reveal wonderful specks in the sand that will delight your for days. But delve deeper and deeper into it and you can become consumed completely and find many wonderful things - who knows maybe you might just find a treasure chest (or something equally exciting - like a new life long skill!)
